Workshop: Japanese Folk Art Learn over five workshops to construct a quilt in the Japanese Folk Art style which has become very popular recently. The Japanese work with their own subdued palette of fabrics and recreate the American Folk Art look in miniature. Students may alternatively work using any colour fabric which they like. Over the weeks students will be provided with a quilt layout and then choose which patchwork and appliqué motives to put on it, so that all the quilts will be different and customised to that person. Alternatively make a smaller project each time such as a tea cosy or mobile phone case. This set of workshops would also be a suitable introduction for a beginner who wishes to learn some traditional techniques. Quilt layout - appliquéd flowers – mobile telephone bag.
Houses/ buildings – birdhouses – tissue box
Baskets, appliquéd and pieced – embroidered flowers – tea cozy
Oother themes, animals, teacups, trees, birds etc..Small wall hanging
Filler blocks – other embellishments – putting it all together – Fabric Basket
Students do not have to take all the workshops, though it is worth while to attend the first one if the student wishes to make a wall hanging. We will be using my Japanese Folk Art quilt as one of the sources of inspiration on this course.
Note: The three embroidered Cat designs on this quilt were taken from designs of "Woodcutter's Daughter" by Barb Smith.
